My Dear Friend of Democracy,
Perhaps never in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany has a party broken its election promise (not to incur new debt) more quickly and radically than the CDU party of the likely next Federal Chancellor, Friedrich Merz. Perhaps such a breach has never been more important.
Yesterday, together with the possible coalition partner, the social democratic SPD, it was decided to exempt defence spending above 1 per cent of GDP from debt brake rules, enabling Germany to increase military spending without limit. Merz also revealed plans for a new 500 billion Euros special fund to boost infrastructure.
Better infrastructure will strengthen people's confidence in a promising future, but above all, the rapid and massive expansion of military security will help to ensure that dictators like Putin do not come up with the idea of challenging our democracy militarily.
Yesterday evening showed that democracy can act in a crisis with the right people at the helm. Provided the Bundestag passes the resolutions, we will be able to live better and more safely in the future.
See you in Germany,
Johannes Eber
