My Dear Friend of Democracy,
How do scientists' findings reach the world?
Increasingly through publications that are accessible to everyone. Open access is the term for that.
In 2016, German politicians and the scientific community committed to creating open access for as many scientific publications as possible.
This is now bearing fruit.
More than two-thirds of all publications published in Germany are now open access (see chart above, more information here).
By comparison, internationally, the figure is significantly less than half.
Why is open access important?
We live in a time of misinformation, and if everyone has access to scientific knowledge, the likelihood increases that wisdom will prevail over ignorance.
See you in Democracy,
Johannes Eber
