My Dear Friend of Democracy,
I attended a conference in Berlin this week about the economic consequences of the Trump election. Unsurprisingly, the speakers were not very optimistic.
The economic historian Harold James thinks we will face "a dangerous experiment that is unlikely to go well."
So what to do?
James advises focusing on the many contradictions of Trump's upcoming presidency. For example, Trump has announced that he will significantly increase import tariffs, which will heavily burden consumers in the USA.
Similar applies to migration. Trump wants to deport about 11 million workers having no residence status, which would result in a huge shortage of work, James said.
✊ The predictable counteracting consequences of Trump’s announced economic policies could prevent him from making some of the worst decisions. But, of course, we can't rely on that. What we can do: Pointing out the negative economic consequences of his politics.
See you in Europe,
Johannes
