Dear Friends of Democracy,
Just a short statement today from the actor Robert de Niro, who was asked how to convince Trump supporters not to vote for him in the election on 5 November 2024.
That’s what de Niro said:
Let's reach out to Trump's followers with respect. Let's not talk about "democracy." "Democracy" may be our holy grail, but to others it is just a word, a concept, and in their embrace of Trump, they've already turned their backs on it.
Let's talk about right and wrong. Let's talk about humanity.
Let's talk about kindness. Security for our world.
Safety for our families.
Decency.
Let's welcome them back.
What do you think? A good strategy?

De Niro's words are something to chew on.
But he may have a point!
The point being that the world of politics and politicians and the world of the "standard" citizen have lost contact.
To some democracy is just an abstract concept that does not reach into the citizens sphere, where you need to find an apartment, get a job, a doctor appointment.
The recognition of democracy depends on whether it delivers these things, not on whether it is a convincing concept.
