„The triumph of the evil requires the inaction of the good.“ – Alexei Navalny
Dear Friends of Democracy,
What is the greatest threat to democracy?
Probably popular authoritarian leaders.
Wladimir Putin came to power (on 31 Dec 1999) when Russia was economically devastated after a poorly done transformation from communism to capitalism. With Putin, the economy improved. And with the upswing, Putin's popularity also increased.
In the shadow of the economic recovery, Putin cemented his power—bit by bit. Criticism and critics were increasingly suppressed in the name of prosperity and patriotism. Too many people followed this path and chose prosperity over the rule of law and freedom.
Those who did not want to participate in this deal have long been paying a high price. The most popular Russian opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, has now paid the highest.
He is far from the only one, and there are more and more of them. The number of those oppressed, fled, imprisoned and killed (300,000 Russian soldiers have been died in Ukraine or so seriously wounded that they can no longer be mobilised for the war) is constantly increasing.
The longer the journey of Putin from popular leader to ruler of terror takes, the larger that part of the population becomes that experiences the consequences of the mistake, the mistake of granting too much power to an individual. It's always a bet with the devil. He promises you prosperity and security - and in the end, he takes everything away from you.
Therefore: Never exchange freedom for anything!
✊ See you,
