My Dear Friend of Democracy,
Brandenburg, the federal state surrounding Berlin and the region where I spend most of my free time hiking, has elected a new parliament.
The results are somewhat of a disaster.
In the legislative period now beginning, more than a third of the seats will be held by the Alternative for Germany, or AfD for short, which the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution classifies as a suspected right-wing extremist case.
After Thuringia and Saxony, this is the AfD's third success in state elections in Germany within a few weeks and a further indication that in the country where Adolf Hitler came to power nine decades ago, establishing the most inhumane policy in human history, that, today, a significant part of the descendants of the reign of terror either does not know the lessons of history or does not care about them.
Whatever the reasons, now is the time to stand up for democracy.
There are a thousand ways to do this. Get informed, express your opinion, listen, take to the streets, join forces. No one can say there is nothing in it for them. We cannot wait. If we do not act now, it may never again be possible to save democracy with as little risk to ourselves as it is today.
See you in Europe,
Johannes
