My Dear Friend of Democracy,
I was at a book launch last night. Ilko-Sascha Kowalczuk presented his new book "Freiheitsschock" (Freedom Shock). It is about what people from the former GDR experienced after the Wall came down in 1989.
Kowalczuk is a German historian. But he is less concerned about the past than the present.
A few days ago, he said:
"I believe we are at the beginning of something that will later go down in history as the beginning of a state-authoritarian era."
I hope so much that he will not be right.
See you in Europe,
Johannes
