My Dear Friend of Democracy,
A democratic uprising against the shift to the far-right in Europe is not only possible but is actually successfully taking place. In yesterday’s second round of France’s snap parliamentary election, a surprisingly clear majority of French people rejected right-wing extremism.
The Leftist New Popular Front won the most seats in the National Assembly, President Macron’s centrist party, Renaissance, finished second, and Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally came only third. Polls had previously seen the extremist party as the strongest force in the next parliament.
🎉 At 8 p.m. French time, as the first projection was announced, hundreds of people erupted into cheers on the streets of Paris. So did I while watching TV last night here in Berlin.
Vive la France,
Johannes
