Dear Friends of Democracy,
What is a good way to strengthen democracy? You could team up with people who burn for the same topic.
In a team, better ideas emerge, it's more fun, and it gives you new strength.
At least, that was my most recent experience.
Invited by MeetEU, a pan-European discussion community, 35 people from all over Europe came to Berlin, locked themselves at the Jugendherberge Ostkreuz for two days, and created ideas on how to interest people for the European Union in general and the upcoming European Parliament election (🗳️ Thu, 6 – Sun, 9 Jun 2024) in particular.
A bike tour from Lithuania to Lisbon, celebrating a party with your neighbours, sharing your most delicious European food on Instagram – These and many more ideas were born over the two days and finally presented at the French embassy in Berlin.
But for me, the best thing was being together with people burning for democracy, freedom and equal rights. As I said, this recharged me.
That energy will be needed. There is a lot at stake in the upcoming election. The far right will probably be very good at mobilising their people. Since it's hard to convince those people, it will be even more important to mobilise those who don't know much about the election. 2019 voter turnout was only 51 per cent.
So there is a lot to mobilise.
Let's get started!
✊,
Johannes Eber
