My Dear Friend of Democracy,
There are now supposed to be peace negotiations. Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin want to talk about ending the war in Ukraine.
However, we should be more careful with the word "peace".
Trump wants to present himself as a peacemaker. Look, I have delivered, he wants to say after the negotiations, I have ended the war as promised, brought peace to Ukraine.
He may (or may not) end the war, he will definitely not bring peace.
Because the end of the war will have its price. And it will not be paid by the US president. The price will be paid by Ukraine and perhaps by the rest of Europe. And it is not about money. The price is that Ukraine will not only no longer control parts of its territory, but hostile Russian troops will be stationed there. Putin will see this as an invitation to continue to realize his territorial dreams at another time and perhaps in another place.
✊ There will only be peace for Ukraine and for Europe if Putin's Russia learns from the reality that its fight against democratic states is entirely unsuccessful. The upcoming negotiations with Trump are unlikely to convey this reality to Putin. There will be no peace after these negotiations. So we shouldn't call them that.
See you in Democracy,
Johannes
